Parrot Food Includes Fresh Fruit & Vegetables
Parrots need a huge variety of food in their diet. Contrary to popular belief parrots cannot survive on sunflower seeds and peanuts alone. Every day they must eat all kinds of fresh fruit and vegetables, and they must be fresh. Also nuts and breads are ideal to give carbohydrates and proteins.
Pellets are not available here so we suggest you make your own mix of dry seed, which can include sunflower, dry melon seeds. Mix this "half and half" with (organic) muesli mix, available in most supermarkets, also include in this mix various dry fruits such as apricots, banana, dates; these are all available "year round" and will give your parrot a varied, balanced daily start to his diet. Green veg such as broccoli and spinach are available here nearly all year and a reliable source of iron.
There are 3 BIG NO NOs when feeding parrots do not give them caffeine (which includes chocolate), avacados or alcohol (obviously) these could kill your bird.
Parrots have their own "tastes;" not all parrots eat everything; it is up to you to try to introduce a new food "only-one-at-a-time" to increase your parrot's food variety. He may refuse to eat new foods at first, but persevere. If after a few attempts of trying a particular food you have no luck, never mind, discontinue and try something else. He will let you know when he likes something!!

Buying a Cage?
The cage size is essential for any parrot. Here in Dubai there are many shops that sell large cages similar to this one. If you don't know where to look please contact us. Cages should have at least 2 perches and look for any sharp edges, which could hurt your parrot, file them down. Also painted cages should be avoided if possible, look for plain steel/metal. You should also buy a strong table for the cage, which should be at least waist height, parrots like to be at your eye level at least, this makes them feel more secure and safe.

Entertainment & Fun!
As well as homing and feeding your parrot, you will need to consider how you will amuse your new friend. This is certainly something to consider before you have even acquired a parrot. Parrots are like small children, they need entertaining most of the time, this can include you or not.
Most pet shops in western countries have endless supplies of parrot toys, swings, climbing gyms, wooden chews and so on. But what about in Dubai? As well as the small number of petshops consider this....There are various chain supermarkets that sell baby/toddler toys, which are safe to give your parrot. All the plastic teething rattles, plastic keys, squeaky toys are all suitable. If you want to get even more clever you can buy a bucket of wooden bricks from a well known toy store and string them together to form a chain, parrots love a good challenge of unravelling them. How about wooden chopsticks from your local Chinese take away/delivery? They always give you far too many chopsticks, now you know what to do with them! Anything wooden is extremely good for parrots because this helps keep their beak in trim, remember they came from the wild and used trees to keep themselves healthy, you now have to provide these missing environs.
A parrot needs variety and keeping him tucked up in a cage all day is very stressful for a bird, you need to let him clamber about his cage on the OUTSIDE too. Let him explore with you, your home. If this is difficult them find another "parrot area" such as an old chair or even get your local carpenter to make a tall perch with many pegs on for your parrot to clamber on,if you need help in this area with this contact us.
